Grandma

By the end of the movie, GRANDMA (a terrific Lily Tomlin as Elle) has had a long day…and we’ve inadvertently had a tour of a rich life, told not in flashbacks, but in flashes of insight. Her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) precipitates the odyssey when she seeks the money for an abortion, a quest that draws in colorful characters (Sam Elliott, Laverne Cox, Judy Greer, Marcia Gay Harden, and the late Elizabeth Peña) from Elle’s past and puts the complexities of those relationships under the kind of scrutiny that only a blunt-talking, cranky old crone can deliver. Kudos to Tomlin, the rest of the cast, and writer-director Paul Weitz for giving this such wonderful voice. —YSM

About Your Sacrificial Moviegoer

We love to sit in the dark with a big tub of popcorn amid a roomful of strangers. Reports on what we witness there come in two varieties: Bullet Reviews quickly and concisely convey our take on a film, always in spoiler-free fashion; Trailer Trash reveals Your Sacrificial Moviegoer's best prediction on whether an upcoming movie is worth seeing, based solely on the trailer (the short "previews" before the feature presentation).
