Made in Bangkok

[Palm Springs International Film Festival 2016 report]
Mexican transgender opera singer Morgana travels to Thailand to compete in the Miss International Queen trans beauty pageant; will she win the prize money–just enough for her longed-for reassignment surgery, to finally have a female body, MADE IN BANGKOK? This documentary is director Flavio Florencio’s first film, which may explain why it limps along a bit, despite a premise packed with possibilities for suspense, pathos, and payoffs. Thank goodness for delightful Morgana, who nonetheless makes the movie worthwhile and wins hearts, whether she triumphs at the pageant or not. –YSM

About Your Sacrificial Moviegoer

We love to sit in the dark with a big tub of popcorn amid a roomful of strangers. Reports on what we witness there come in two varieties: Bullet Reviews quickly and concisely convey our take on a film, always in spoiler-free fashion; Trailer Trash reveals Your Sacrificial Moviegoer's best prediction on whether an upcoming movie is worth seeing, based solely on the trailer (the short "previews" before the feature presentation).
