Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Finally, a Star Wars movie worthy of the name. ROGUE ONE jumps back to just before the original classic, assembling a ragtag group of rebels for a mission to stop the evil Galactic Empire’s planet-killing Death Star before it can even get started. Like the Death Star, ROGUE ONE is not without its design flaws–a failure to properly establish its lead character (Felicity Jones), unnecessary to-and-fro in the beginning, a laughable performance by Forest Whitaker–but none prove fatal, and by the final act that familiar joy of that galaxy a long time ago and far, far away will return with a fresh twist. For while visual and story references to the original trilogy are littered everywhere here (most notably in two remarkable character CGIs), this is no pale rehash like The Force Awakens; ROGUE ONE hits a new note. Add striking imagery, terrific battle scenes, and welcome departures in villain (Ben Mendelsohn) and droid (the excellent Alan Tudyk), and it’s enough to wash the awful taste of the prequel trilogy out of your mouth. –YSM

We love to sit in the dark with a big tub of popcorn amid a roomful of strangers. Reports on what we witness there come in two varieties: Bullet Reviews quickly and concisely convey our take on a film, always in spoiler-free fashion; Trailer Trash reveals Your Sacrificial Moviegoer's best prediction on whether an upcoming movie is worth seeing, based solely on the trailer (the short "previews" before the feature presentation).
